About Don Giovanni
Eros and Thanatos are in complete control here. First and foremost, Don Giovanni himself. The fundamental human forces that seem so irreconcilably opposed – the libidinal and the death drives – define this evening. The allegory of these principles, conceived in 2019 as a silent role by director Jan Bosse for this production, climbs onto the screen on stage right at the start and eventually out of the orchestra pit. Curtain up! The subconscious holds the reins. In the nested ruins of a façade designed by set designer Stéphane Laimé, it is not only the spaces that peel away – video projections make the unconscious visible. Here, Don Giovanni is not a tale of the perpetrator’s downfall, but of how long he is allowed to fall and why he is permitted to do so for so long. The opera exposes a society that tolerates transgressions as long as they are carried out with elegance, and only reacts once everything has already been destroyed.
