Omer Meir Wellber conducts the premiere of Le Grand Macabre at the season opening of the Teatro Massimo in Palermo on November 24, 2024. The opera by György Ligeti is directed by Barbora Horáková.
During rehearsals, Omer Meir Wellber explains:
“In 2020, I started my journey with “Parsifal” at the Teatro Massimo, then came “Onegin”, “Carmen”, “Il crepuscolo dei soigni” and the corona pandemic… After “Tristan und Isolde”, which we performed this year in May, I thought: to end my wonderful five years here, I should do something… absurd and crazy! “Le Grand Macabre” is a truly incredible piece by Ligeti, a piece that was written in the 1970s and is perhaps one of the most important pieces of contemporary music to this day. In my opinion, the audience should treat this as an evening of theater! Because it’s great theater, accompanied by lots of jokes and fun: so there’s laughter, there’s crying, it gets sexy – and it all happens on stage. All this is accompanied by the extremely funny and beautiful music played by the orchestra!”
